First Lady Laura Bush joined Representatives Donald Payne and John Boozman to launch the Congressional Malaria Caucus, a bipartisan effort to fight the disease.
In observance of Malaria Awareness Day, First Lady Laura Bush joined Representatives Donald Payne (D-NJ), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health, and Congressman John Boozman (R-AR), to launch the Congressional Malaria Caucus. The caucus is a bipartisan effort to raise awareness of the United States' and the international community's fight against the malaria epidemic and to support increased efforts to stem its tide. The caucus supports the deployment of key malaria interventions including insecticide-treated nets and effective medications, investment in new research, and the strong funding of bi- and multi-lateral programs including the President's Malaria Initiative and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. As of its launch, the caucus membership included Chairman Howard Berman and Ranking Member Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and nearly 20 other lawmakers. Endeavor worked alongside Malaria No More Policy Center to catalyze the formation of this important caucus, which will build bipartisan, congressional leadership and cultivate new champions for this important issue.
